Fear and The Naughty Golfer

Thu, Nov 13, 2008

General

The naughty golfer is really quite ingenious. He can create fear from a very clever illusion. Perhaps you’ve heard of this famous psychology demonstration. A plank of wood is laid across the floor and a person is asked to walk across it, which they do confidently and competently.

They are then asked to imagine that the plank is a bridge between two skyscrapers, to picture the view and hear the traffic below. A funny thing happens when the walk over the plank again – that’s right, they start to stumble.

When you hit your tee shot over water the naughty golfer insists you think about the water even if only in an indirect way;

 ‘Oh oh! Don’t hit the water what ever you do. You’ve done that before haven’t you’

The good golfer helps you to focus on where you want the ball to go. The water doesn’t come into it.
