Your Lob wedge or Sand wedge can easily become your best friend in the world. And save you 6 or 7 shots per round. High soft landing recovery shots can be hit by and level of golfer if you follow these three simple steps.
- Let your club and its design do the hard work for you. Take advantage of the club and don’t kill it before you even start your swing. If your clubface is in a square – open position at address then you are creating 2 fundamental helping factors – Loft and Bounce. Loft gives you height and the Bounce lets your club swing without digging into the ground. At address keep your hands ahead of the club head this will also stop you from digging into the ground and fluffing the shot.
- The dreaded closed face! This is the killer shot of the Lob wedge. The clubface needs to start and stay in an open position throughout the whole swing. You must also keep your swing smooth at all time, slowly back and accelorate through the shot. A great image to conjure up is to picture in your mind a glass of wine balanced on an open clubface at set up – try to sense that on your back and through swing the glass stays balanced on the club!
- Mix good imagery with good practice. Try hitting some Lob shots into an opened umbrella, this give you a great feel for the shot and what it take to play it well time and time again. A high soft flight will see the ball land and stay in the umbrella. One last thing… let the club swing to nearly a full finish – the higher the finish the higher the ball will go. With this new shot in your bag your scores will really improve.
It’s a must to practice this shot before you try it out in a club medal or any competition.
Good Luck and keep your head down.
