There is much to be said for playing golf in the 21stCentury as golf balls have been developed beyond recognition since their introduction and have come a long way to make the game a bit easier.
The history bit….
The first balls specifically made for golf were made of wood, its doesn’t bear thinking about how painful that might have been with the jarring
pain shooting right up your arm.
In 1618 the feather golf ball which was cow or horse hide stuffed with goose feather was introduced with the original name ” featherie”
To this day the characteristics of this golf ball have made it the standard golf ball for more than two hundred years.
The practice of hammering the ball to give it an evenly dimpled shape helped give the ball to have a more consistent flight ,came about after the “gutte” ball made from dried sap of a Sapodilla Tree was invented as the defects made onto this ball once hit by the club actually assisted its flight.
Many people are unsure which is the best ball to help them win their game on the golf course and taken from some experts in the field the following recommendations are:-
Beginners
If you are new to this great game and /or prone to losing the odd ball or two,the answer could be a two piece ball the characteristics low compression and side spin reduction which are compatible with the lower swing speeds of beginners of the average golfer. It is less expensive though giving maximum distance. The ball generally has a hard wearing outer cover made from surlyn which can withstand more “ribbed ” shots without too much strain on the ball. Examples of these Nike Distance,Taylormade Burner or Titleist NXT Extreme.
Mid Handicappers
For those who wish distance but also more connection with the ball to control around the green, the suggestion is to use a three piece
ball. In addition to the hard wearing outer cover of the two piece ball these also have an elastic layer to allow you greater spin and control. Examples are Titleist PTS Roll and Srixon AD333.
Ladies
Generally ladies have a slower swing golf ball companies have designed specifically to suit lady golfers. Two piece balls with a softer compression core and with a hard outer cover to generate power and distance.
Examples are Calloway Pearl and Srixon Lady.
Single Figure handicappers and Pros.
Maximum control is the aim of these golfers These golfers will be looking for four piece balls. These are the most expensive balls due to the technology required to manufacture them.
The outer cover is softer and made from elastomer and includes two layers of elastic surrounding the central core. Examples of this are Callaway IX, Nike One Black and Titleist PROV1x.
The latest development in the golf ball market is Talyormade Penta TP ball with 5 layers.
Watch out in you local golf stores for this new ball.
