A Scot in Spain watching the World Cup

Thu, Jun 24, 2010

General

I am not an expert ( being a woman) and I am not ( even though I am Scottish) one of the many who would support any football team in the World Cup except England.
We have watched many of the games and find that the expectations of people have been dashed as scores fall short of what should have happened. Several of the really good teams could have played much better than they have and begs the question as why do the players who play well for their clubs appear unable to achieve the desired results for the fans in this World Cup in South Africa.

However being able to live in this country and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle after many years in a pretty high pressured job-find myself cheering for Espana!.  The Spanish side is commonly referred to as La Furia Roja (The Red Fury) not sure if this refers to the passion for the game or their anger when they don’t get the desired results.

Spain are the reigning European champions, having won the UEFA European Championship in 2008. Unfortunately their track record in the World Cup is not as good. The highest place they have achieved is 4th in the 1950 World Cup reached 4 times the quarter finals in the world cup (34, 86, 94 and 2002). Sitting in our local bar watching the games drinking the vino tinto ( red wine) cheering them on is enjoyable and the atmosphere has been full of highs and lows.

The next game is very important and we hope that they do win it to stay in the World Cup unlike Italy who sadly lost this afternoon against Slovakia.

Venga en España usted debe golpear Chile!!
