My name is Steven Franchi and have been playing the great game of golf for over 42 years now and my handicap is 2. Reading a very interesting article about golf balls the other day in a magazine called Bunkered, it got me wondering how many golfers are using the correct ball to suit them.

The article is on pages (142-146) and titled Ball Fitting, “It’s all about common sense”.

My view on this golf ball is that there are far far to many golfers out there in the mid to high h/c bracket using the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball and as this is also the most expensive golf ball on the market today and they maybe wasting a lot of money.

This golf ball was designed for very low h/c golfers and pro’s to help enhance their natural abilities to play this great game.

Most golfers will not be aware that you need at least a club head speed of 105 mph at impact to compress this type of golf ball to get the optimum advantages of the Pro V1 golf ball.

The same goes for all three-piece, four-piece and five-piece golf balls on the market today.

It is well worth going to somewhere like American golf, Navada Bob’s or your local pro and getting them to tell you what club head speed you as a player generates at impact of the golf ball.

If you are one of the players I mentioned above and you are using the Titleist Pro V1 not only will you be losing many yards from the tee with your new expensive driver but you will also be losing distance with all of your irons too.

As this article states its well worth spending half an hour with a pro and finding out what club head speed you as an individual play produces, it could save you a fortune in golf balls.

Its like a minefield out there with the amout of different golf balls on the market today, but with a littel help from your pro it won’t take long to find the correct golf ball for your own game.

One last thing ,there are many two piece distance golf balls on the market today that will give you the extra distance you are looking for but will also give you the soft feel of the Titleist Pro V1 on and around the greens at a fraction of the cost.

Please feel free to add you comments back to me about this article and let me know how you get on with using a different golf ball if you decide to change.

The Titleist Pro V1 golf Ball-is this right for you?? is a post from: Golf4uAlicante Blog

Football who would have thought!
Living in the country which has managed to make it through to the final of the World Cup has been an interesting experience ( having moved from Scotland bless em don’t do well in International football) we have enjoyed the street parties as each time they have moved through the stages of the tournament.

Spanish drivers often use the car horns in normal driving conditions but recently the revellers have been using them in celebration as their country’s team wins another game and the refreshingly no sign of any drunken violence.
Interestingly enough I read a prediction from a person claiming to be from the future and stated that Netherlands and Spain would be in the final and Netherlands would win 2-1 and this was at the beginning of the tournament so…. perhaps a little flutter!
Thousands of British expats will be joining Spanish fans on Sunday for a full integration by football as they cheer ‘La Roja’ in the World Cup final against Holland. Many of us already proved our support to their host nation’s team on Wednesday night, when fans came out in force to celebrate Spain’s semifinal victory over Germany. ‘King’ Carles Puyol’s winning header sent supporters into a frenzy that saw fans take to the streets, beaches, fountains and squares of Alicante, Bendiorm, Dénia, Jávea and many other towns. Fair play predominated as resigned Germany fans admitted defeat, and many joined in the party too – swapping their white shirts for red ones.

Sunday will be a European football fiesta on the Costas where Dutch and Spain fans will clash for a while, and celebrate together after. Come on España – Venga Spain!

Spain in the World Cup Final is a post from: Golf4uAlicante Blog

Open at St Andrews
The Open will be staged for the 150th time and will be watched by one of the biggest TV audiences in The World over the four days of fierce competition.

The Old Course at St Andrews has had some modifications for this year’s Championship, most notably to the world famous 17th The Road Hole. The tee has been moved back on slightly to the right for The Championship so that the hardest hole in golf will play as it was originally designed to. The hole will play long and will require some imagination and almost any player in the field would take level par over the four days at this hole. In the past we have seen some of the best golfers totally humiliated in the green side bunker, where some have run up serious double-digit scores. Other holes will see far less dramatic modifications but the bunkers that were almost redundant in recent years will now come back into play as the course is lengthened to combat how far the modern greats are hitting the ball.

In it to win it

There are very many players who state The Old Course is their favourite course in The World. All will fancy their chances and be full of confidence when the event starts on Thursday morning.

Rory McIllroy will be amongst the bookies’ favourites and has played well around the course several times as an amateur, the professional game is different though and it is thought that he’ll have to wait a few years to pick up The Claret Jug.

Padraig Harrington will contend and has the experience of winning The Open but he will only contend if the weather gets bad and makes others struggle. Tiger Woods took the course apart 10 years ago and loves the atmosphere but whether his head is in it or not only time will tell. Tiger won it at the last two Opens – 2000 and 2005.

Ernie Els has come back to form and could be a good outside bet. Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Paul Casey could all win it for England if they bring their ‘A’ games with Poulter seemingly the most determined.

KJ Choi could become the first in many years from Asia to compete and is due a good result in a major championship; I don’t think he’ll be far away at the end.

Of the Americans Phil Mickelson is perhaps the most fancied but I think he hits the ball too high to contend if the wind gets up and this is probably the hardest of all the majors for him to win.

What about the oldies: could we see Watson, Faldo, Lyle or Norman compete again? Probably not in all honesty but Watson got very close last year so the experience of winning the most important event in sport could play a very big part at the end of the scheduled 72 holes.

Whatever happens, the whole of the golfing public await the morning of the Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th July 2010. and the four days of The Open in great anticipation. Keep everything crossed for a European winner.

Open at St Andrews is a post from: Golf4uAlicante Blog

I am not an expert ( being a woman) and I am not ( even though I am Scottish) one of the many who would support any football team in the World Cup except England.
We have watched many of the games and find that the expectations of people have been dashed as scores fall short of what should have happened. Several of the really good teams could have played much better than they have and begs the question as why do the players who play well for their clubs appear unable to achieve the desired results for the fans in this World Cup in South Africa.

However being able to live in this country and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle after many years in a pretty high pressured job-find myself cheering for Espana!. The Spanish side is commonly referred to as La Furia Roja (The Red Fury) not sure if this refers to the passion for the game or their anger when they don’t get the desired results.

Spain are the reigning European champions, having won the UEFA European Championship in 2008. Unfortunately their track record in the World Cup is not as good. The highest place they have achieved is 4th in the 1950 World Cup reached 4 times the quarter finals in the world cup (34, 86, 94 and 2002). Sitting in our local bar watching the games drinking the vino tinto ( red wine) cheering them on is enjoyable and the atmosphere has been full of highs and lows.

The next game is very important and we hope that they do win it to stay in the World Cup unlike Italy who sadly lost this afternoon against Slovakia.

Venga en España usted debe golpear Chile!!

A Scot in Spain watching the World Cup is a post from: Golf4uAlicante Blog

Spain looks to follows suit after the UK and Ireland ,a recent article that may become the law next year to ban smoking indoors.
The smoking ban did financially damage many bars, restaurants and hotels as people may choose to stay at home with a carry out instead of a night down the local.

In Scotland when it was introduced we saw the hardy, determined Scots seen puffing away outside their offices and bars in the evenings come rain or hail. Many bars had to provide a smoking area on pavements and outside areas which cost the owners a fair bit of money.

The big difference in Spain is that the many bars and restaurants already have the facilities and the sunshine to smoke out side so the financial outlay will not hit the hospitality industry in Spain in the same way it did in the UK.

New law announced to coincide with world non smoking day . Last Tuesday the Health Minister of Spain, Trinidad Jimenez declared that new restrictions will be brought in regarding smoking in public places from 2011.

The Minister said that the 2006 law reform prohibiting smoking in workplaces and on the underground, amongst other places, will be put before the Congress for debate.
But banning smoking in public has received opposition from the country’s Hotel and Catering Federation who claim that the ban would considerably affect the industry.

However Jimenez presented statistics showing that more than 44% of Spaniards oppose the ban while a majority of 47% favour the no smoking laws.

Youngsters in Spain are the group which are the heaviest smokers. They are also the ones with the least intention of giving up.

According to Isabel Oriol, the President of Asociación Española contra el Cáncer (AECC), 33% of Spaniards aged between 16 and 24 smoke. Their level of smoking rises during the holidays and on nights out. The average age at which they take their first puff is just 13, and a year later many are smoking on a daily basis. 33.7% of all Spanish smokers are aged 18 to 29.

Monday 31st May was ‘WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY’. It is being used to try and persuade youngsters in Spain to give up smoking. A series of posters and advertisements are being released through various channels. One motivating factor to give up is that next year it will be illegal to smoke in all enclosed public areas, such as bars and restaurants.

Smoking Ban in Spain 2011? is a post from: Golf4uAlicante Blog

For many, the age of 50 may be the beginning of the end, but a group of scientists claim the good life begins only when people reach their fifties.
Despite increased risk of death and disease, it seemed that people in their fifties worry less, ignore the negatives and accentuate the positives, according to scientists at Stony Brook University, New York.

The researchers said that when people reach the landmark age, their stress, anger and worry fade gradually and feelings of happiness start to surge.

Dr Arthur Stone, one of the authors of the study, said their findings were “striking”.

“You would think as chronic illness threatens life would get worse but that is not the case because people don’t focus on the threats,” he said. “They focus on the good things in life like family and friends.”

Good news for the over 50’s is a post from: Golf4uAlicante Blog

An Obituary printed in the London Times – Interesting and sadly rather true.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;

- Why the early bird gets the worm;

- Life isn’t always fair;

- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

I Know My Rights

I Want It Now

Someone Else Is To Blame

I’m A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Costa hotels have lost millions and experts forecast a troublesome summer
RATHER than storm clouds gathering over the Costas this summer season, it is a cloud of another sort threatening to scupper any hopes the tourism sector had of recovering from a disastrous 2009 and of recuperating the failing British market.

Hotel chains are reporting that cancellations of advance bookings are increasing due the uncertainty being caused by the continuing eruption of the Icelandic volcano.
They say tourists are extremely worried that if they travel outside of the countries they may find themselves stranded abroad if the volcano has another major eruption.
A spokesman said that if people are refusing to take the risk there is little that can be done, but he warned the increasing losses being experienced by the sector will have a knock-on effect that will lead to more unemployment.

The situation for the sector is that when flights are cancelled nobody is coming in to fill empty bed spaces, which for hotels is the worst case scenario.

Javier Luri, president of Alicante hotels association, said the fallout from the ash cloud is not only affecting the hotels that deal with groups seeking the sun and beaches, inland areas are also being hit hard because the airports that serve them are subject to closure as well.
That apart, the tourist apartment sector managed to equal its April 2009 occupation rates this year, despite the crisis caused by the volcano.

Costa Blanca Affected by Ash Cloud is a post from: Golf4uAlicante Blog

As the high season slowly moves into low season the golf courses in Spain offer further discounted green fees to encourage more golfers to golf in the rising heat.

Steven visits the local golf courses on a daily basis and often bumps into golfers who do not realise they can save a few euro on the various golf courses in the area by just giving Golf4uAlicante a call.

Today 12/5/10 Steven met some chaps sho had been quoted 55 euro for golf at Villamartin at the caddy masters and we got them on for 47 euros saving them several euro per person. If you multiply this by 3 or 4 rounds of golf, the savings can soon provide enough money for a good night out on the town.

The advantage of using our services means taking the hasssle of getting in touch with with different golf courses to get the tee times you want and saving money – sounds good to me.

So ,if you plan a visit to Costa Blanca or Costa Calida for some golf please call us on (+34) 965 329 719 or email Lucy on info@golf4ualicante.com
