January 2010

 January 2010
Welcome to the 1st edition of 2010 Golf4uAlicante newsletter. We hope you have all had an enjoyable Christmas and hopefully looking forward to a properous 2010.
We have been watching the British news and could not believe the snow and low temperatures for such a long period in the UK. We hope that you have seen the last of it and are looking forward to playing some golf in the sun.

Reasons to be Cheerful in 2010
Reading Iain Carter's BBC News blog brought an uplifting message for golf and golfers for 2010 as he expresses the opinion that this year has the potential to be a vintage year for golf.

Forgetting all the nasty words like credit crunch, tournaments under threat and sponsorship deals to be done. Leave aside the current troubles of the sports top player and instead look ahead to what should be a fantastic twelve months for golf fans.

Here are Iain's ten reasons to be cheerful in 2010...

Money well spent
Three million euros is to be spent in promoting the region to the British and other International markets following a pioneering pact between the national body Turespana, Costa Blanca Tourism Board and the Valencian Tourist Board as the Alicante region relies heavily on these markets to sustain its success and development.

Golfing Season 2010
Once the Christmas credit card bills have been paid we get an influx of enquiries for the coming golfing season. Tee times continue to fill up at a fair speed and never a truer phrase can be said than
"if you're not fast you're last!"

So if you require a specific tee time please book as soon as possible.

The indication is that next year there will be increasingly more golfers heading to our beautiful courses to enjoy reasonably priced golf under blue skies.

 Green Fees Price Freeze
Cheap golf green fees still prevail - take a look at just a few of them; just received an email from the Quara Group who own La Finca, Las Ramblas and Villamartin announcing no increase in green fees for 2010. Until end of February low season means a game of golf at La Finca is only 45 euro, Villamartin is 40 euro and Las Ramblas 38 euro plus reduced buggy prices too - anyone fancy a game?

 Barcelona worth a visit

In the beginning of January we took a trip up North to the beautiful city of Barcelona. We visited La Segrada Familia the unfinished church designed by Gaudi.
Not one for heights it is an experience enjoyed by many to take the lift to the top and walk down the very steep and winding stairs - but not me!

Scots Lass MBE
It was good to read recently that a Scottish female done good.
North Berwick Golfer Catriona Matthew, winner of this years Women's British Open Golf Championship, received an MBE for services to the sport.

Corvera Delayed
We were told last month that Rodas' sister golf course would open on 18th Janaury but not so. Unfortunately there were unforeseen delays and they now tell us it will open a few months later  in March. Please watch this space for further news.

Smoking in Spain
Good news for some not so for the non smokers. Despite the implmentation date of 1st January 2010 a smoking ban in public places in Spain the debate still goes on. The opposition parties fail to agree and Madrid has set it's own rules. The problems of going outside for a puff in the wetter Uk weather has affected a significanet number of businesses. In Spain however the opportunity to smoke outside in the comfort of warm evening would mean that both smokers and non smokers could live in harmony.

Torrevieja Salt
Due to the prolonged cold spell in the UK, Torrevieja salt has helped tackle the icy conditions. There has been an unprecedented rise in salt sales and there have been 150 lorries a day waiting for salt.

Cold winds
The Syberia winds have had an affect on Spain too recently as we have seen snow onthe hills last week in Alicante. Do not be worried as during the day it still manages to reach 18 degrees and sunshine.
