Tourism figures rise
===============
While the British market fell by between 15 and 20 per cent in recent seasons; bookings for this summer in the Costa Blanca have increased by 18 per cent, tourism figures show.
Regional Tourism Minister Belen Juste said British tourism this year is very close to 2007’s figures, with 1.9 million booked.
Seve Ballesteros
============
He was a truly exceptional figure of world sport but, at heart, remained the small town boy who wanted to be remembered and honoured with quiet dignity like any other humble villager of Pedreña.
He had little time for criticism from others - famously and sarcastically asking a journalist who questioned how he played a particular hole, "Tell me, how should I have played it?"
The decision to award the 2018 Ryder cup to Paris and not Madrid is a blow to Spain as it would have been a fitting tribute to the man who made an immense contribution to this competition.
The European Tour board took a detached and pragmatic view, while not wishing to be insensitive towards calls from within the Ballesteros family for Spain to host it in his honour. They plumped for a venue whose contours provide a stadium-type environment for the closing holes.
Many believe it will not be the same this time around without Seve being there. Read more

Drivers be warned
============
Handling out traffic fines has now become a very profitable business for Guardia Civil officers under new government guidelines. These reward them with a monthly bonus of up to 200 euros if they meet productivity rates set out in a new guideline document.Under the deal officers will earn more if they hand out fines than they will if they attend road traffic accidents but over the course of a month everything is taken into account and the bonus is worked out accordingly. Under the new guideline, officers will get one point if they provide help to a member of the public, two points if they attend a road traffic accident, five if they make an arrest and a massive nine points if they arrest someone who is under the influence of alcohol.
Earthquake plan
===========
Following this week’s devastating earthquake in Lorca, the Orihuela Town Hall has issued details of its own emergency plan should a similar seismic event occur within the municipality.
Orihuela, lies on a fault line that runs straight through the southeast of Spain and that is the same fault line that has led to the recent earthquake in Lorca.
See you next month!
